"Health is More Than Healthcare"

Health Equity Circle

HEC SPOKANE

HEC MISSION:

Health Equity Circle (HEC) is an interprofessional student organization that addresses political and socioeconomic issues affecting health in our communities through the process of community organizing. Our goal is to identify issues that matter to our local community members, research and develop a plan for how best to address these issues, and then mobilize the community to act in order to achieve the change they seek. Our focus is on working with community members on issues that matter to them, with the goal of empowerment.

WHO WE ARE:
Our student members come from a variety of programs on the inter-school Riverpoint campus in downtown Spokane. These include programs such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Public Health, and Law. Our students come from Washington State University, Eastern Washington University, the University of Washington, and Gonzaga University.

WHAT WE DO:
HEC offers an elective “Health Equity and Community Organizing” course, which is open to all students on the Riverpoint campus. In addition, we are a member of the Spokane Alliance – a non-partisan group of 30 local organizations representing over 20,000 community members; the Alliance organizes campaigns to make change regarding current issues in Spokane. We are involved in a variety of the Alliance's campaigns, as well as many student-led projects, which you can read about here. If you are interested in learning more about HEC or getting involved, check out our upcoming events or contact us.
